Ryan Hardy wins Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro contest

Held over three days in waves that can only be described as perfect, the Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro saw the world's best riders all vying for glory, but in clean, near perfect conditions it was Hardy who took the first event of the 2009 International Bodyboarding World Tour; showing all why he is considered as one of the greatest ever.

'I am stoked to win the first ever Grand Slam with the guys standing next to me,' said the elated Hardy.

Opening up the final with an impressive 8.50 (out of a possible 10), Costes had the other finalist's needing a two-wave combination to take the lead, the title and an early season lead.

A long, deep tube ride followed by a gigantic roll netted him a near perfect ride, 9.43 (out of a possible 10); and then within a few minutes Hardy found another tube and this time back-flipped out of the end bowl, leaving the crowd in raptures and the prestigious trophy within his grasp.

It was a historical fiction, set at Versailles during the early(') 1700's and had a brother and sister, although I do believe that the book was focused on the sister.

It was very frank about womanly cycles and the whole problem of no indoor plumbing in the palace.

I also remember that the cover was either a painting or a photograph of a garden with a fountain('), a lot of dark greens with the fountain(') being the only other color.

The cover looks like .Somewhat of a longshot as there are things that are similar (brother and sister, female servant who was part African) but McIntyre's book focuses heavily on a mermaid that was found in the sea.

Le crunch: dining in France on a budget

opposite is true - most local restaurant owners care so much about the food

that making the place look nice is merely an afterthought.

The French really know how to do "le pique-nique", so tuck into baguettes,

cheese, charcuterie and patés fresh from the producers and fill paper bags

with ripe cherries, sun-blushed apricots and rosy nectarines.

The moment your toes touch the sand and your gaze meets water, you know you're in the Bahamas

France is the latest country in Europe to be brought to its knees by massive public protests over the worsening global economy.

Disparate sections of French society are increasingly united in their disgust at the national government for bailing out large French banks, while the growing perception is that individual wages are stagnant and overall quality of life is declining.

The French protests were primarily peaceful, though youths in Paris were seen throwing bottles with flammable material, which caused several fires in the center of the city.

After the island nation's entire banking sector collapsed in the second half of 2008, the local currency plunged, and interest rates ballooned to 18 percent.

SF Living Abroad Examiner: Buying flowers in France

GerberasIf you're in France this Valentine's Day and want to buy a little something for your sweetheart, you're in luck: in pretty much any French town, the best place to buy flowers is at the marché.

Depending on the size of your town, the "farmer's market" is held at least once a week and usually offers a great selection of flowers at reasonable prices. In Hyères, for example, two bunches of ranuncula go for 5 euros, while a dozen roses can cost anywhere from €5 to 8.

Whether the language was Bambara or Fulfulde (the language of the Fulani and what I learned while in the Peace Corps), the greetings remained consistent: They began with...

One of the problems with living in Costa Rica is that the tourist visa only allows you a three-month stay, after which you are obliged to leave the country for at least 72 hours.

Editorial: Keep France out of our pond

Even if the now-defunct French crown really did commission Rene-Robert Sieur de LaSalle to build the commercial ship, the Griffon has been sitting in Michigan waters long enough to have grown Michigan roots.

France only asserted its rights to the ship after the hard work had been done to find it, and that should be considered as the federal courts mull whether France or Michigan has a better claim to the historic vessel.

The exploration company is seeking to be named custodian over the ship's remains as the federal courts wade through the tangle of international maritime law.

If the Griffon is determined to be in Michigan waters -- there's some thought that it may actually be in Wisconsin -- it should be considered Michigan property and used to document the earliest history of this state.
